Anglesey school children trained as Digital Heroes so they could help their families


The Headteacher of Ysgol Rhoscolyn, Sarah Roberts, is keen to involve parents and guardians in the learning and development of pupils. She recognised that digital inclusion activities were one way to do this, and approached DCW for advice.

DCW ran a Digital Heroes programme in the school for children in years 5 and 6. Once completed, the children not only delivered training to pupils in years 3 and 4, but also ran a session for their parents and grandparents.

Why
Ysgol Rhoscolyn is a small rural primary school near Holyhead in Anglesey. The school has a strong links to its local community.

The Headteacher, Ms Roberts, recognised the impact digital exclusion could have on parents and children alike. She was keen to implement a programme that could support pupils and their families.

How
The DCW Advisor suggested running an adapted Digital Hero training programme for children from years 5 & 6.

A programme was devised which included the following topics:
• How to stay safe online
• Personal information and online strangers
• Passwords, security and sharing with parents
• Different apps –YouTube-kids, Skype, SnapChat, Facetime, Instagram
• Https – Padlock – Online shopping

Impact
34 children received the training. The sessions helped them improve their own knowledge, whilst providing them with the skills to support younger children in the school and their families.

After the initial session, the children delivered training to pupils in years 3 and 4, followed by a session for parents and guardians.

The training highlighted several areas where parents were unaware of the potential dangers faced by their children through being online. In some cases, the children were more aware of the risks than the parents. The training prompted conversations between children and adults which helped close this knowledge gap.

The sessions have also strengthened the school’s ability to communicate with parents and guardians using digital technology.
