Louise Blackwell, Community Development Officer, Clwyd Alyn Housing Association
Clwyd Alyn Housing Association was launched in 1978 as a non-charitable Registered Social Landlord (RSL) to answer the growing housing needs of the community throughout the former County of Clwyd and the District of Aberconwy. Its primary role is to provide housing and related care needs to meet a range of community needs.
Clwyd Alyn now manages in excess of 5,500 units in six unitary authority areas (Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham and Powys) and employs over 500 members of staff.
How We Helped
Digital Communities Wales (DCW) provided support to Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, as part of the Pennaf Housing Group, by delivering Digital Champion training to staff, volunteers and residents, and providing IT kit.
The training was carried out across a number of Clwyd Alyn sites, including sheltered housing (older people) and at its Head Office, which Service Improvement Committee members attended. These sessions focused on how people could become Digital Champions, supporting others within their community to get online.
Clwyd Alyn officers have also delivered their own Digital Inclusion sessions. These have typically run for two hours at a time and have been tailored to what residents have said they most want or need, including: how to use social media and online calendars, as Clwyd Alyn is keen to ensure that the training continues to meet the interests of those attending the sessions, to help ensure maximum interest.
The kit provided to Clwyd Alyn by DCW has been placed where needs have been identified, including sheltered housing schemes in Amlwch, Abergele and Ruthin. In Amlwch, tenants had not previously had access to IT equipment or wi-fi, so this was a brand new experience for them. The kit has been used daily in some places, with others hosting weekly sessions.
Clwyd Alyn has also teamed up with another organisation (Keepmoat), who lends them kit, to help extend the reach of the equipment. In at least one location, wardens have been able to support residents to carry out basic tasks online (i.e. online shopping).
