Age Cymru Ceredigion

Age Cymru Ceredigion (formerly Age Concern Ceredigion) is an independent charity, registered in 1994, which supports older people aged 50+ in and around Ceredigion.

Its vision, for a world in which older people flourish, is shared with its national partners across the UK. Its mission is to improve life with and for older people in and around Ceredigion and to also:

  • provide services and support in direct response to older peoples’ expressed needs
  • become involved in public education and advocate on behalf of older people and their carers
  • work for the development of services that are innovative and flexible enough to respond to changing conditions
  • work in partnership with other organisations, both statutory and voluntary, in order to promote services and allow older people to live full and satisfying lives
  • encourage a positive view of older people

How We Helped

Digital Communities Wales (DCW) has provided support to Age Cymru Ceredigion (ACC) through the provision of IT kit.

Dozens of voluntary organisations, charities and community groups have received kit from DCW to date, with ACC being one. In the case of ACC, the kit is for customer use only and is ring-fenced from existing office equipment. The organisation has received a laptop, iPad and a trackball mouse.

Before attending this class, I was given a laptop to practice on at home – it was utterly my fault that I did not make full use of it.

If and when I buy a laptop or a desktop computer, I shall certainly return for more classes. The two hour classes opened up another world for me.

My tutor proved to be an excellent teacher, understanding and sympathetic which was invaluable to an absolute beginner like me.

The Impact

Many of ACC’s customers are being helped to access online services. To help achieve this, ACC is training at least two dedicated digital champions through DCW. ACC currently has 200 volunteers and will encourage its service users and volunteers to become digital volunteers for the organisation, supporting them to access DCW training.

The provision of kit from DCW has enabled ACC to start a new class in Cardigan, following demand and need from local people. Depending on the success of that class, ACC will look at rolling out further sessions in other areas
of need, such as community halls in more isolated areas including Beulah and Sarnau.

Ultimately, this will all lead ACC to help more of its service users to experience digital technology, improving their skills and access to equipment.
