Wales set for Get Online Week!

17th October 2016

Get Online Week is back! 17-23 October will see thousands of events take place in communities all across the UK, showing people how the internet can make life easier, cheaper, healthier and more fun! Events in Wales will be contributing to this, with many people expected to get online for the first time, or learn how to do more with computers and the internet.

This is the tenth annual Get Online Week, where events are held, usually in community venues, for people to find new ways of engaging with digital technology in ways that can help enrich their lives.

In Wales, a host of organisations will be providing opportunities for learning experiences throughout the week. 65 Coleg Gwent ICT Welsh Baccalaureate students will be volunteering at drop-in sessions throughout Caerphilly and Newport (and parts of Monmouthshire and Torfaen) during the course of the week. Sessions are mostly taking place in libraries.

The week kicks off with digital drop in sessions in places including Bridgend, Cwmbran, Rhyl and Usk. Wednesday and Thursday look like being the busiest days in Wales this Get Online Week, with events including a drop in session for tenants of Cardiff Community Housing Association, a session for carers being put on by Get the Vale Online, and the launch of the Get Newport Online website.

Friday sees the launch of Digital Fridays in Rhondda Cynon Taf, where people will be able to access on-the-spot support in a number of local libraries every Friday. Elsewhere, tenants of Clwyd Alyn Housing in North Wales will be supported to use the organisation’s online portal.

The diversity of events in Wales really is quite rich, with ‘Get Online through Family Trees’ in Swansea, to ‘saving money through online shopping’ in Denbighshire, and ‘getting help with smartphones and tablets’ in Monmouthshire – there really is something for everyone in Wales during Get Online Week.
During Get Online Week, Digital Communities Wales will also be running a campaign to get more organisations to sign the Digital Inclusion Charter. This will be done through a mixture of social media and the campaigning platform Thunderclap.

You can follow all the Get Online Week action through @DC_Wales on Twitter and the hashtag #GOLW16.

Get Online Week in Wales 2016 – 17-23 October

All week

65 Coleg Gwent ICT Welsh Baccalaureate students are volunteering at drop-in sessions throughout Caerphilly and Newport (and parts of Monmouthshire and Torfaen) during the course of the week. Sessions are mostly taking place in libraries.

Charter Housing’s digital team will be out with the Charter Moneysavers, giving people advice about online safety, downloading useful apps, handing out money-saving USB sticks and asking if anyone needs help getting online via its refurbished smart phone scheme or laptop loan scheme.

During Get Online Week, Digital Communities Wales will also be running a campaign to get more organisations to sign the Digital Inclusion Charter. This will be done through a mixture of social media and the campaigning platform Thunderclap.
