Tech Angels volunteers help older learners in North Wales
Tech Angels is a brand new partnership and service launched by the Royal Voluntary Service and Bangor University, in Gwynedd and Anglesey. Tech Angels help older people with any tech issues (phones, computers, tablets, TV) by providing personalised support at the older person’s home. Digital Communities Wales has trained and qualified the volunteers as Digital Champions. The only charge made for the service is the volunteer’s travel expenses IF any are incurred.
Here’s a story of how one Tech Angel, Claire, has supported a client:
“Norman had a tablet but was unsure how to use Facebook properly and how to manage notifications on the tablet. We spent some time practising clearing the notifications and looking at various parts of Facebook, in particular Messenger and making video calls to family members. I showed Norman how to access the camera, then we took a photo and uploaded it to Facebook. This is something he has wanted to do for a while but didn’t know how. It was a very productive hour and I left Norman with renewed confidence to explore the tablet further. We agreed to meet again a week later for a follow up session and to answer any other queries that he might have. It was very enjoyable and rewarding for me to be able to help Norman, and the feedback from Norman was very positive.”
Norman said “I learned more today than I have since I got my tablet. I would definitely use the service again.”
Colin, another Tech Angels client, said “The visit helped me sort out a problem I have had with my phone for over 2 years. Thank you.”
