Primary school helps to deliver IT sessions in Rhondda Cynon Taf scheme

2nd March 2017

Digital Fridays is an exciting new project in partnership between RCT Communities First, RCT Libraries, Digital Communities Wales and local housing associations. Digital Fridays provides a free drop in for anyone who needs support to get online or help to use their own devices. Digital Fridays runs simultaneously across Rhondda Cynon Taf in libraries and Communities First Offices between 10am-12pm every week.

Tref y Rhyg Primary School was keen to get involved in the project at its local Digital Fridays venue at Capel Farm Resource Centre. The school brought along two of its Digital Champions to help and assist participants.
The pupils instantly took to their positions, providing support on a range of queries such as using a mouse, searching for videos on YouTube and setting up social media accounts. They have built up a great rapport with participants and staff alike.

Their teacher Mrs Hanson-Spure said “The boys look forward to attending the sessions and I feel proud that they are able to support individuals from the local community and empower them to use IT. Even though information may seem basic to the younger generation, the boys are very understanding to the individuals’ levels and needs.’’

The young pupils have grown over the weeks and they now have confidence approaching new participants to offer support. Whilst the idea was initially a pilot, the pupils have continued to attend and feedback tells us they enjoy it very much.

Boyd, 11, said “I feel happy and excited, I was helping a lady use a computer and she was learning new skills!”

Cory, 10 said “I feel proud because I was helping others use their gadgets in the community where I live!”

Mr Brian Dixon, 74, who has been supported by the pupils, told us “The boys are very helpful and knowledgeable and are very easy to get along with. The boys are very patient with me and I enjoy having their support”.
