Kelly finds digital volunteering vital to career prospects
From Kelly Morris, Digital Volunteer
I have been a digital volunteer since November 2012 and I have committed over 950 volunteering hours. My work programme advisor suggested that I put my excellent IT skills to good use and pass them on to members of the community who are digitally excluded. I got introduced to the team at Get Caerphilly Online.
Since joining the team I have helped people from all different backgrounds (unemployed to older people) reap the many benefits of being online. I have led ‘First Click’ sessions, for beginners, independently at many venues and also been involved in a lot of promotional activities such as family fun days. Since the launch of Digital Fridays in December 2012 I have helped a lot of digitally excluded people, a majority of those have been job seekers. Seeing the progress of people who were initially scared to switch a computer on, to attaching a CV to an e-mail is very rewarding. Many have come back to the sessions to thank me.
The Digital Friday sessions are run in local libraries across the Caerphilly borough. All the library staff have been exceptionally supportive of this project and always pass people on to the Digital Friday team if they are unable to help, and always recommend people to come and see us if they have any problems. The support I have received from Get Caerphilly Online has been incredible, the opportunities I have been given have been great and they are always asking if I am ok or need further help.
The whole experience of volunteering has been invaluable. As well as seeing people vastly improve their digital skills, volunteering has also given me back the confidence that I had lost. I believe that volunteering has greatly increased my career prospects as it gives you a lot of transferable skills.
