Job Centre Plus Canton, Cardiff

The Jobcentre Plus office in Canton is one of three in the capital city.

The Canton office is currently supporting in excess of 2,000 people to find work or move closer towards the job market.

Outline of our Intervention

Over the last 4 years the service offered by the Jobcentre has increasingly been delivered through digital services. With the introduction of Universal Credit digital skills training has been delivered both in both internally and with JCP customers.

Matt’s delivery of training on Social Media really brought to life the various types/platforms available. The feedback from the staff who attended was very positive – all had learnt from the delivery and he did it so that all were engaged, despite their varying existing knowledge.

The speed of change has been swift and at times it is difficult to know which digital option to choose. With this in mind Digital Communities Wales delivered social media training to JCP staff with a focus on exploring the best tool for the customer.

With the many social media options available, the session focused on exploring what staff currently used, what was available through the Jobcentre and what was most appropriate for their customers. With the group mixed from people who use social media regularly to those who prefer to stay away, the session was useful to ensure the JCP staff focused on the most appropriate tool to support their customers.

As a result of the session JCP staff were really keen to learn more about MOOCs online training resources. A new session is currently being developed by DCW to support this delivery.

Individual Impact

Lucy Veryard, Work Coach at JCP Canton:
“When Matt attended the office for the group information session this really raised my awareness of social media on a personal and professional level. He went through all the types of social media and their individual benefits, so this enabled me to give my customers a better awareness of what social media to use for job searching. Matt also made us aware of free online training courses which was excellent for us to deliver back to our customers,”
