HAPI Hub Fitbit Project

HAPI (Healthy, Aspiring, Prosperous and Inclusive) is a non-clinical health and wellbeing project which aims to empower residents in Rhydyfelin, Hawthorn, Glyntaff and surrounding areas to make positive health choices.

The project works with tenants of Newydd Housing Association and the wider community.

Outline of our Intervention

Digital Communities Wales provided the HAPI project with a Fitbit toolkit and loaned them five Fitbits. The aim of the project was to engage with five participants around health, wellbeing and digital skills, in and around Rhydyfelin, Pontypridd. The project ran over an eight-week period and was co-ordinated from the HAPI hub.

Impact of our Intervention

A meeting and launch day was set where the participants were helped to set up their Fitbit and shown how the device can be used to meet their health goals.

The group met every two weeks in the HAPI hub for mutual support. For HAPI we were able to report that the levels of activity increased during the project, and that the participants who took part in the project developed new digital skills through linking the Fitbit with their smartphones.

This project enabled residents to track and compare one another’s activity levels, providing an opportunity for residents to come together in a social capacity and build friendship groups.

Participants reported that they are more digitally aware and are now able to use fitness apps to track, analyse data and as a result improve their lifestyle.

Individual Impact

One participant, Andrea said she was relieved how easy it had become, especially when the addiction kicked in of looking at the app after every walk to the kitchen! Shee has since downloaded a number of game apps for her youngest son and Whatsapp in order for other family members to share photos with her.
