Fern Partnership, Ferndale, Rhondda

Fern Partnership is a community organisation in Rhondda Cynon Taff which delivers various Communities First projects.

It is currently running two strands – adult learning and family engagement/activities. It is a new organisation, and runs activities such as adult learning classes (such as first aid, it, Welsh and health and safety), job clubs, stage school, bingo and a variety of other activities. It works with UHOVI, WEA and USW as part of their adult learning programmes.

The situation / problem

The organisation was expecting a large increase in job club attendees, and training was identified as a need to help ensure staff and volunteers could give suitable help to those attending the club.

It’s raised my confidence, my awareness and my skills to support the community and give them the best help I can.

Impact of our intervention

Following the DCW training, participants reported feeling more confident and prepared to help people with a variety of online job seeking activities. It also raised their awareness of the digital by default agenda.
Due to the mixed nature of the class, they were also able to build partnerships with others in the area, such as the DWP. During the course, a variety of local information was shared, which the Fern Partnership could act upon. Job club growth has occurred and larger groups are now attending.
