RCT Jobcentreplus

Jobcentreplus (JCP) staff in Rhondda Cynon Taff wanted to increase the digital awareness & ability of claimants. Working in partnership with Get RCT Online, JCP organised a ‘Bring in a Digital Device’ event. This involved JCP customers bringing in a digital device that they were lacking the confidence in and /or skills to operate for example, smartphones, laptops and tablets.
It was agreed to run the event alongside a Digital Friday session at Capel Farm in Tonyrefail.

Work coaches in the Jobcentre were asked to refer suitable claimants to the session on Friday 17th March 2017, where they would be supported by Get RCT Online partners, including DCW and Communities First.

On the day staff supported people to set up shortcuts for Universal Jobmatch on smartphones and tablets for easier claimant access to online DWP services.
Kate Francis was one claimant who brought in her son’s tablet which she was having difficulty operating – in fact was unable to switch it on. During the session staff demonstrated how the device worked having shown her initially how to recharge it.

Kate was also looking for employment, ideally factory work. Staff at the event telephoned a local employer and were pleased to find out they were indeed looking to recruit Production Workers. Staff assisted Kate to send a copy of her CV by email to the employer and she had an immediate reply offering her an interview that same day. Kate attended the interview and was initially offered a work trial commencing the following Monday.

The employer was so impressed with Kate that they decided not to use the Work Trial but to offer her paid employment from the outset. Kate was thrilled – attending the digital session had not only increased her digital skills but has directly led to full time paid employment.
